Quality versus Quantity in SEO

Google has altered the way SEO’s think about optimizing and maintaining a website.  In the past, you could do your keyword research, build some pages, and work your way to the top of the search engines.  The game has changed significantly over the last few years, months, and even weeks.  It is extremely important to be adding quality, not quantity, to the web if you want your website to be found.  We have been working on improving several of our systems over the last few weeks, and what we have done has already shown some drastic improvement for many of our clients.  Here is just a glimpse of what the search engines now find useful and relevant.

Create Quality Content On Your Site

The main focus in the past was to make sure that the words used in your meta information matched what was on the page of your site.  Recently, Google has launched a new Penguin update focused on over-optimization of websites.  Now it as important to use variations on words throughout your content, as well as providing information that is going to keep searchers on your page for longer periods of time.

We have implemented a system within our office that forces everyone to read the content “without” the search engines in mind.  Scan content from the point of the reader, and point out when something sounds artificial in nature, or geared towards the search engines.  This is going to keep your page around much longer than if you are just writing with the search engines in mind.

Social Media Playing Vital Role In Organic Rankings.

I never believed that a plumber would see much benefit from a Facebook page, or tweeting about his new technique for snaking a drain.  I still doubt that anyone goes to Facebook when looking for a DUI attorney or orthopedic surgeon, but I know that having a social media presence is essential in building trust with Google and the other search engines.

We have worked hard over the last week to build our Facebook presence, and have increased the number of likes on our page by 500%.  It was not nearly as hard as you may think, (we simply started to ask people for likes) and our analytics report has shown a spike in traffic on our site.  We are now urging all of our potential clients to push Facebook more often, and to also utilize Twitter.  We recently did a press release announcing a new employee.  We were shocked to see that the story was being re-tweeted all over Twitter, and our new employee was getting emails and comments on her Facebook change congratulating her on her new job.  Again, I wouldn’t have believes it unless it actually happened.   Post some quality content on Twitter, you may be shocked at the results.

Adding More Optimized Pages To Each Website

It appears that Google is now rewarding bigger websites with higher rankings.  I guess that is why DC DUI attorneys have 13,000 page websites.  The more quality content you can provide, the higher your rankings are going to be for the keywords and phrases you are writing about.  It makes sense, but it was not always the case with the Google.  As long as you were laser focused on what you wanted to rank highly for, we would generally see our clients jump right to the top of the search engines.   Adding more quality content to your site is going to increase your relevance and importance to the search engines.  Find a few topics that you know your client base is searching for, and start writing good content.  It will pay off in the long run.

Of course, these are just a few of the things you can do to improve your rankings, and there are many others that can produce great results.   The first step for many is to check the optimization score of your website, and get a bird’s-eye view into what the search engines see when they crawl your site.   Once you have an idea of where your website stands, you can work on improving your results day after day.
